The PIN number is a security mechanism to make the use of the online ID function of the ID card as secure as possible. Your PIN number must only be known to you. Do not use combinations of numbers that are easy to guess.

When using the AusweisApp, the PIN number is requested each time you use it. You can use it to identify yourself quickly and securely online.

• If you have your PIN number, you can change it yourself at any time.
• If you have forgotten or lost your PIN number or if the PIN number has been blocked by entering it incorrectly, you will need a new PIN number. You can obtain this from one of the citizens' offices.

Replacing or changing your PIN number at one of the citizens' offices:

Have you lost or forgotten your PIN number for the online ID function of your ID card or eID card? Then you need to replace your existing PIN number with a new PIN number. Even if you still know your PIN number, you can have it changed at the Citizens' Offices.

• You can have your PIN number replaced or changed at the Citizens' Offices during opening hours without an appointment.
• The new or changed PIN number can only be requested in person.
• Select a 6-digit PIN number from the numbers of your choice on site.
• The PIN number will be saved on the valid ID card or eID card you brought with you. You can then use the functions of the AusweisApp immediately.

Change your PIN number yourself:

If you know your PIN number, you can also change it yourself.

• If you have your PIN number, you can change it at any time using your smartphone or on your own computer at home. To do this, you will need the appropriate software, for example the AusweisApp. You can find more information about the software under "Where can I find out more?".
