As a person entitled to international protection, you can apply for a residence permit to continue a course of study you have begun in another EU country if you meet certain requirements.

If you are recognised as a person entitled to international protection in another EU member state and have been studying there for at least two years, you can obtain a residence permit to continue your studies in Germany.

The residence permit for the continuation of studies begun in another EU country is a temporary residence title. It is issued for the duration of the part of your studies that is carried out in Germany.

With your residence permit for the purpose of your studies, you are generally allowed to work for up to 120 days or 240 half days per year as well as to do part-time student work.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • Valid passport
  • Current biometric photo
  • Current residence permit
  • Proof of means of subsistence (e.g. scholarship certificate, declaration of commitment, blocked account at a bank)
  • Rental contract
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of status as a person entitled to international protection in another EU member state
  • Proof of studies in another EU member state and, if applicable, proof of participation in a programme with mobility measures (e.g. Erasmus)
  • Letter of admission from the receiving educational institution in Germany

Voraussetzungen

  • You have a recognised and valid passport or passport replacement.
  • There is no interest in deportation against you.
  • Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • You have been recognised as a person entitled to international protection in another EU member state.
  • You have been studying in another EU member state for at least two years.
  • You have been admitted to a state-recognised higher education institution or a recognised educational institution in Germany.
  • You can prove that you are participating in a Union or multilateral programme with mobility measures (e.g. Erasmus) or an agreement between two or more higher education institutions applies to you.
  • Your livelihood is secured for the duration of your studies.

Kosten

Issue of residence permit: EUR 100,00

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be considered.

Verfahrensablauf

The residence permit must be applied for at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:

  • Depending on the foreigners authority and your concerns, it may be possible to apply via the internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
  • If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office. During the appointment, your application will be accepted and your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment). Your fingerprints will be taken for the production of an electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Aliens' Registration Office if necessary. During the appointment, your documents will be checked (please bring them with you to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the production of the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • If your application is granted, the Aliens' Registration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be produced.
  • After about six to eight weeks you can collect the eAT card from the Aliens' Registration Office.
  • The eAT card must always be collected in person.
  • There are fees for the issuing of the residence permit. The timing and form of payment vary depending on the authority.
