Approbation als Tierarzt Erteilung

If you would like to work as a veterinarian in Germany after studying veterinary medicine, apply for a license to practice at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Integration and Consumer Protection (MSGIV).

If you wish to work permanently as a veterinarian in Germany, you must be licensed (approbiert) for this activity. You must apply for a license to practice in the country in which you wish to work as a veterinarian.

• completed application form
• Copy of identity card or comparable identification document
• In the event of a change of name, suitable official proof (e.g. marriage certificate)
• Original medical certificate (not older than 1 month) stating that there are no indications that you are unfit in terms of health to properly exercise the profession.
  • This must be issued and signed by a general practitioner or internal medicine practitioner established in Germany or another signatory state to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in Switzerland and stamped with a practice or clinic stamp. If the practice or clinic stamp is not in German, a German translation of the stamp is required.
• for proof of personal reliability:
  • Declaration that no legal criminal proceedings or public prosecutor's investigation proceedings are pending against you.
    
• For residence in Germany:
  • Certificate of good conduct of document type "O"
    In Germany, this must be applied for at the registration office of the place of residence, stating the purpose "Approbation as a veterinarian". The certificate of good conduct will be sent directly to the competent authority by the Federal Office of Justice.
    
• If you live abroad:
  • Documents from your home country that prove your personal reliability.
    (Extracts from criminal records from all countries in which you have resided for more than 6 months in the last 5 years.
    The criminal record extracts must not be older than 3 months when the application is received.
    Certified copies of these extracts must be submitted).
• Curriculum vitae with the focus of your previous professional activity
• The original or an officially certified copy of certificates (e.g. diplomas) relating to the veterinary examination or
  • proof of training from the relevant EU/EEA country or Switzerland or
  • Proof of training and certificate of equivalence from the competent authority of the respective country
• Proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language

The MSGIV may request further documents to verify personal reliability.

Further evidence (e.g. proof of employment) may also be required. Please contact the MSGIV directly.

Please note:Foreign-language documents must be accompanied by a German translation. The translation must be carried out by an officially sworn document interpreter.

• Completed veterinary studies
• Training is equivalent to a German university degree (you may have to take additional examinations or knowledge tests)
• Proof that you
  • have not been guilty of any behavior that makes you unworthy or unreliable to practice the veterinary profession
  • are suitable in terms of health for practicing the veterinary profession
  • have the knowledge of the German language required for practicing the profession

Veterinary training completed in one of the other EU/EEA states or in Switzerland is equivalent to training in Germany. The equivalence of the training must be proven.

Fee for the granting of a license to practice as a veterinarian: EUR 102.00 to 256.00

You apply for a license to practice as a veterinarian in writing:

• You can obtain the necessary forms from the MSGIV.
• Complete the form and sign it by hand or provide it with a qualified electronic signature.
• The application must state that you wish to exercise the professional activity in Brandenburg.
• Attach the necessary supporting documents.
• Submit the application documents to the MSGIV.
• The MSGIV will then check whether you meet all the requirements.
• The MSGIV will inform you within 4 weeks whether your application is complete or whether you need to submit further documents.
• Once you have been licensed, you will receive a certificate of approval.

The official certificate of good conduct must not have been issued more than 1 month prior to submission.

The medical certificate must not be older than 1 month.
