In order to be able to practice the profession of veterinarian in Germany, a separate professional license - the license to practice medicine or the permission to temporarily practice the veterinary profession - is required.
The license to practice medicine is granted by the federal state in which the veterinary examination was taken or, if the veterinary training took place outside of Germany, by the federal state in which the veterinary profession is to be exercised in established activity.

The documents required in accordance with § 4 of the Federal Veterinary Regulations (BTÄO) and § 63 of the Ordinance on the Licensing of Veterinarians (TAppV) are required. They may be addressed to the competent authority without any specific formalities.
The license to practice medicine is linked to various prerequisites, which are based on
- successful completion of studies in Germany or an equivalent qualification abroad,
- nationality, and
- personal and health suitability for the exercise of the profession
cover.
The granting of the license to practice veterinary medicine is subject to a fee. According to the General Schedule of Fees (AllGO), fees of up to 590.00 euros are charged for the granting of licensure, depending on the profession. In addition, there are the costs for the delivery of the license to practice medicine.
The application for a licence to practise medicine or authorisation to practise the veterinary profession on a temporary basis must be submitted before the veterinary profession is practised.
A veterinary activity before the granting of the license to practice medicine can lead to criminal consequences according to § 132a of the Criminal Code (StGB).
In order to be able to practice the profession as a veterinarian in Germany, a separate professional license is required.
