Erlaubnis und Ausnahmegenehmigung für den Großraum- und Schwerverkehr: Erteilung

Traffic on public roads with vehicles and trains whose dimensions, axle loads or total weights actually exceed the limits generally permitted by law requires special permission.

Preconditions

A permit or exemption may only be granted if certain conditions are met, e.g.:

• carriage of an indivisible cargo,
• transport by rail or water not possible,
• suitable route available.

Procedure

A permit or exemption shall be granted upon written request. Applications can be submitted by fax, e-mail or online via the nationwide procedure management for large-capacity and heavy transports (VEMAGS).

The application should always be made 14 days before the transport is carried out.

An individual permit or exemption is valid for a journey with a vehicle or a combination of vehicles.

A permanent permit or exemption for up to a maximum of 3 years may only be granted if, in addition to the requirements for an individual licence, other conditions are met, e.g.:

• police escort is not required,
• only for certain routes,
• or for all roads under the jurisdiction of the licensing authority and the neighbouring road traffic authorities.

The responsibility lies with the district, the district-free city, the independent city and the municipality.
