Your identity card has been lost or has expired and you need a new one? Then you can apply for a temporary identity card.

If you need an ID card immediately and cannot wait for the production (usually takes 4 weeks) by the Bundesdruckerei, there is the possibility of issuing a temporary ID card. With the temporary ID card, you can, for example, bridge the time until the issuance of a regular ID card.

As a rule, this will be the case if the ID card is lost (must be reported immediately) or if the application is submitted late.

You can substantiate the loss by submitting a notice of loss.
At the same time, you must apply for the issue of your new ID card when you apply for a temporary ID card.

Your temporary ID card is valid for a maximum of 3 months.

You must return the old temporary or regular ID card when the new temporary ID card is issued to you.

The application for a temporary ID card must be made in person, only the collection is possible by a representative (issue power of attorney!).

• biometric passport photo (photo sample board Bundesdruckerei): The photo must be
  • be up-to-date and
  • meet the requirements for photos for electronic ID cards.
• If available and not yet validated: old ID card or passport or temporary ID card or children's passport (valid or already expired).
• If no valid passport or ID card available: birth certificate, marriage certificate
• for children under 16 years of age: if applicable, declaration of consent of the custodial parent who is not present
  • if only one parent is present, additionally proof of custody
• in case of loss: presentation of a notice of loss

You can apply for a temporary identity card if

• you have German citizenship
• are registered in Germany
• do not have a valid identity card

For application outside your main place of residence:

• You must be able to show an important reason why you are not applying for the temporary ID card at the Bürgeramt at your main place of residence.
• Exception: The temporary ID card cannot be applied for abroad.

You must apply for the temporary ID card in person at the Citizen's Office. If you do not apply for your temporary ID card at your main residence, you need an important reason and a surcharge will be added to the fee. If you contact the Citizen's Office you have chosen beforehand, you can find out whether and to what extent the Citizen's Office recognizes your reason.
You can apply for the temporary ID card and the new regular ID card at the same time.
The authority will issue the temporary ID card to you directly on the spot.

You will receive the temporary ID card immediately.

The obligation to apply for a temporary identity card applies to you if you

• have German citizenship
• have reached the age of 16
• are registered in Germany and
• do not have a valid identity card or passport.

• Identity card issuance provisional
• must be returned when the new regular identity card is issued
• will be issued immediately
• Validity period: maximum 3 months
• Cost:
  • EUR 10,00
  • EUR 13.00 surcharge if application is made outside office hours or not at the main place of residence
• responsible: Bürgeramt at the main place of residence or any other Bürgeramt
