In order for your advanced vocational training to be funded by the Upgrading BAföG, you must provide proof of the professional qualification (degree and/or professional experience) required for admission to the examination.

One document that you must submit for funding is the so-called "Form Z". On this form, you must confirm that you meet the professional admission requirements for the examination or can meet them by the time of the examination. The body responsible for this is the one that also conducts the final examination for the qualification you are aiming for. Depending on the qualification, this may be the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or the Chamber of Crafts (HWK).

Typically, you qualify either by completing your first vocational training and/or gaining professional experience. You can also provide evidence of the required prior qualification if you have dropped out of university, have professional experience or have a Bachelor's degree from a university. The exact requirements are set out in the examination regulations for the respective further education qualification.

With the confirmation of your pre-qualification, you can apply for the so-called "Aufstiegs-BAföG". Depending on the federal state, BAföG offices or other authorities are responsible for this.

Proof of fulfillment of the admission requirements:

• Training qualification, other qualification (e.g. recognized further training qualification)
• Possibly other evidence, e.g. certificates of employment and references

Fulfillment of the requirements for admission to the desired advanced training examination:

• Training in a recognized training occupation or a comparable vocational qualification and advanced training qualification
• Bachelor's graduates, university drop-outs and high school graduates with professional experience may also be qualified

As a rule, there are no costs for completing Form Z. Admission fees may be charged for the admission test associated with the completion of Form Z.

• You apply for verification and confirmation of your pre-qualification at the office responsible for your desired degree before you apply for the training grant.
• To do this, send the completed form Z of the complete application together with the proof of your pre-qualification.
• The responsible office will check your pre-qualification.
• You will receive the completed Form Z by post.

Once your pre-qualification has been confirmed, you can apply for funding.

Depending on the completeness of the documents, processing may take several weeks.

Please note the AFBG deadlines and submit the application for confirmation of pre-qualification to the IHK in good time.

Disputes under public law in accordance with this Act are subject to administrative recourse, while disputes arising from the loan agreement (of the AFBG) are subject to ordinary legal recourse.
