If you want to use the professional title "Staatlich geprüfte Lebensmittelchemikerin/Staatlich geprüfter Lebensmittelchemiker", you need a state permit for this.
The additional qualification as "Staatlich geprüfte Lebensmittelchemikerin/Statlich geprüfter Lebensmittelchemiker" in addition to a completed degree in food chemistry must be proven for an activity in the official food monitoring and for the approval as a private counter-sample expert according to the Counter-Sample Regulation. Outside of these activities, the professional title "State-certified food chemist" is not required in all professional areas. For example, it may be possible to work in research institutes, industrial laboratories or consumer organizations without the aforementioned professional title if this meets the requirements profile demanded there. In these cases, it is possible to practice the profession with the academic degree "Diplom-Lebensmittelchemiker/in" or with an equivalent university degree. However, the professional title "State-certified food chemist" may not then be used.
If you have obtained your degree abroad and wish to use the professional title "Staatlich geprüfte Lebensmittelchemikerin/Staatlich geprüfter Lebensmittelchemiker", you can apply to have the equivalence of your degree with the German degree verified.
- a tabular list in German of the training courses completed and the gainful activities pursued
- a proof of identity
- proof of education acquired abroad
- proof of relevant professional experience or other evidence of qualification, if this is required to establish equivalence
- a certificate of authorization to practice the profession in the country of training, if the profession is also regulated there
- a statement as to whether you have already submitted an application for a determination of equivalence and, if so, to which authority
- if applicable, the decision of another federal state on the determination of equivalence.
All documents from the second up to and including the sixth point must be submitted as originals or as certified copies. As a rule, all documents must be submitted in German. If the documents are written in another language, you will need a translation by a publicly appointed or sworn interpreter or translator. The competent body may also allow another form for the documents to be submitted.
Documents issued or recognized in an EU member state or another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area may also be submitted electronically as of January 18, 2016. In case of reasonable doubt as to the authenticity of the documents submitted and if absolutely necessary, the competent body may also require the submission of certified copies in this case.
In order to establish the equivalence of your professional qualification acquired abroad, you must demonstrate that you intend to pursue an occupation in Thuringia that corresponds to your professional qualification.
Your professional qualification will be checked for equivalence to the following requirements prescribed in Thuringia for the granting of permission to use the professional title "Staatlich geprüfte Lebensmittelchemikerin/Staatlich geprüfter Lebensmittelchemiker":
- successfully completed studies in food chemistry at a university or college of at least eight semesters of study
- practical training of at least one year at a training facility approved for this purpose by the competent authority after completion of the studies, and
- followed by: successful completion of the state examination for state-certified food chemists.
In the procedure, your foreign professional qualification is compared with the professional qualification required by state law. The competent body checks whether there are significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German professional qualification. In addition to the training, your professional experience acquired in Germany or abroad may also be taken into account.
If the examination is positive, you will receive a certificate of equivalence when you are granted permission to use the professional title "State-certified food chemist".
If there are significant differences between your and the German reference qualification, you have the option of completing an adaptation measure (aptitude test or adaptation course) in order to achieve equivalence. The responsible office will inform you about the exact modalities.
You will be notified of a decision on the determination of the equivalence of your training certificate within three months of submission of the complete documentation. The deadline may be reasonably extended once if this is justified by the specifics of the matter. The extension of the deadline is a maximum of one month if you have acquired your proof of education in a member state of the EU or a contracting state of the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in a state equated by agreement.
No deadlines are set for the application. The processing time specified below must be observed.
In order to be granted permission to use the professional title "Staatlich geprüfte Lebensmittelchemikerin/Staatlich geprüfter Lebensmittelchemiker", you must have the German language skills required to perform the job.
Permission will not be granted to persons who are not reliable. A granted permit must be withdrawn if facts justify the assumption that the exercise of the profession endangers the life or health of people.
The recognition and qualification consulting offices of the network "Integration through Qualification" (IQ network) will be happy to advise and accompany you before, during and after the recognition procedure.
You have the right to appeal against the decision of the responsible office on your application or against a decision not made in due time in accordance with the Administrative Court Code (objection proceedings, if necessary legal action).
