If you are recognized as a beneficiary of international protection in another EU member state and have been studying there for at least two years, you can obtain a residence permit to continue your studies in Germany.

The residence permit for the continuation of studies started in another EU country is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for the duration of the part of your studies that is carried out in Germany.

With your residence permit for the purpose of your studies, you are generally allowed to work for up to 120 days or 240 half days per year as well as take on student jobs.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • current biometric photo
  • current residence permit
  • Proof of livelihood (e.g. scholarship certificate, declaration of commitment, blocked account at a bank)
  • rental agreement
  • Proof of your health insurance
  • Proof of international protection status in another EU member state
  • Proof of study in another EU member state and, if applicable, proof of participation in a program with mobility measures (e.g. Erasmus)
  • Letter of admission from the receiving educational institution in Germany

Voraussetzungen

  • You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute.
  • There is no interest in deporting you.
  • Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • You have been recognized as a beneficiary of international protection in another EU member state.
  • You have been studying in another EU member state for at least two years.
  • You have been admitted to a state-recognized university or a recognized educational institution in Germany.
  • You can prove that you are participating in a Union or multilateral program with mobility measures (e.g. Erasmus) or that you are covered by an agreement between two or more universities.
  • Your livelihood is guaranteed for the duration of your studies.

Issuing a residence permit: EUR 100.00

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be possible.

Verfahrensablauf

You must apply for a residence permit at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:

  • Depending on the foreigners authority and your request, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic applications for residence permits.
  • If you can only apply in person, make an appointment with the immigration office. During the appointment, your application will be accepted and your supporting documents checked (bring these with you to the appointment). Your fingerprints will be taken for the production of an electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • In the case of an electronic application, the Immigration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Immigration Office if necessary. During the appointment, your documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the production of the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • If your application is approved, the Immigration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be issued.
  • After around six to eight weeks, you can collect the eAT card from the immigration office.
