The Monument Protection Act regulates the preservation of monuments in the interest of the general public. For this reason, the Monument Protection Act provides for the reservation of approval in the case of pending changes to monuments. This can also affect renovations or repairs to the interior of a monument as well as changes to its external appearance.

In the case of ground monuments, earthworks and construction work can have an altering effect on the ground monuments, so that such measures are also subject to approval.

Therefore, if you want to carry out altering measures on monuments and these measures do not require a building permit, you need a permit from the responsible lower monument protection authority.

If a building permit is required, the monument permit will be issued as part of the building permit. In this case, please submit an application for approval of the modification of facilities (building permit) to the responsible building supervisory authority. The building supervisory authority will contact the responsible monument protection authority or monument specialist authority on its own initiative.

If you want to make changes to your monument that do not require a building permit (for example, when replacing the front door or windows), you, as the monument owner or authorized representative, must apply for the monument permit for these measures at the responsible lower monument protection authority.

• Fill out the application and submit it in writing or electronically (in the variant replacing written form) together with the required documents.
• The responsible lower monument protection authority will check the requirements in coordination with the monument authority.
• In individual cases, you must submit additional documents for a comprehensive examination.
