Aufnahme in Gemeinschaftsschule beantragen

If your child is to attend a community school after completing elementary school, you must register your child at this community school.

When your child is about to finish elementary school, you as parents have to decide which secondary school your child should attend.

Secondary schools are attended from Year 5 and follow on directly from elementary school (after Year 4). You have the option of sending your child to a community school or a grammar school.

In principle, a community school is attended from Year 5 to Year 10. On completion of year 9, your child will receive the first general school leaving certificate (ESA). The intermediate school leaving certificate (MSA) is obtained on completion of year 10.

At comprehensive schools with a sixth form, your child also has the option of attending years 11-13. After the 13th grade, your child can acquire the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). This qualification entitles your child to study at a university.

Your child is transferred to the 5th grade.

• You register your child at a community school in your area with the 4th grade report card.
• The community school checks the registration.
• You will be informed whether your child will be accepted at the school.

Your local school authority can provide you with information about the community schools in your area.

If your child needs a slightly longer learning period, they can complete years 8 and 9 in a total of 3 years. This is called a flexible transition phase (FlexPhase) and is approved on application.
