Seasonal license plates are suitable for vehicles such as motorcycles that are only used at certain times of the year.

Seasonal license plates are usually applied for vehicles such as motorcycles, convertibles or motorhomes that are only to be used at certain times of the year. Their owners or keepers can thus save themselves frequent registration and deregistration. Insurance cover and the obligation to pay contributions are suspended outside the operating period. (The operating period is indicated on the right-hand side of the license plate; for example 05/11 = the vehicle may be used from May to November).

When registering the vehicle, you specify once the period (at least two to a maximum of eleven months per year) in which you wish to use the vehicle. Outside of this operating period, the vehicle must be parked on private land.

Procedure:
For the registration of a vehicle with a seasonal license plate, depending on whether it is

• a first-time registration (new registration),
• a re-registration after decommissioning,
• registration to a new vehicle owner (transfer within the registration district or from outside),

• Registration certificate Part I (ZB I, formerly: vehicle registration document),
• Registration certificate part II (ZB II, formerly: vehicle registration document).

For new registrations additionally:

• Valid identity card or passport with registration certificate from the registration office of your place of residence,
• Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB code) from the liability insurer,
• SEPA direct debit mandate (direct debit authorization),
• Test report from the last general inspection,
• Test certificate of the last exhaust emission test (not required for a general inspection carried out after 01.07.2012 or for vehicles that are not subject to mandatory exhaust emission testing).

Also on application:

• by a representative:
  if you instruct a third party to carry out the transfer, they will need a written power of attorney from you. They must also present a copy of your identity document to the registration authority. The representative must have the appropriate identity document with them to prove their identity.
• the registration of minors:
  the written declaration of consent of the legal guardian(s) and the presentation of their identity documents.
• for companies (GmbH, AG, OHG):
  Extract from the commercial register (proof of address required), business registration (proof of address required), power of attorney of the managing director or personal appearance of the managing director.
• for associations:
  Extract from the register of associations; identity card and power of attorney of the named representative(s).
• for civil law companies:
  Complete overview of the shareholders (usually submit shareholder agreement); power of attorney and declaration as to which natural person the license should be issued to (confirmed by signature of all shareholders).

Fees are charged in accordance with the scale of fees for road traffic measures. The vehicle registration authority will provide you with more detailed information on the amount of the fee.

There are also costs for the purchase of license plates.

If you want to change the seasonal period, you will need a new insurance confirmation (eVB code) and new license plates. It is possible to keep the previous license plate number.
