If you do not wish to enroll your child, who will be six years old by June 30 of the current year, you can apply for a leave of absence at the elementary school in your school district.

In Schleswig-Holstein, every child who has reached the age of six up to and including June 30th is required to attend school. All children who turn six on or after July 1st are not required to attend school until the following calendar year.

Then you can apply for a leave of absence from your elementary school in the school district. If approved, your child will be granted a leave of absence from school for one year (deferred).

The school management will decide on the child's leave of absence after discussions with the parents. A school doctor's or school psychologist's report may also be requested.

• Identity card for identification purposes
• Proof of sole custody, if applicable
• If applicable, power of attorney and copy of the identity card of the legal guardian(s) who cannot appear in person
• If necessary, further documents such as medical and psychological reports

Leave of absence may be granted if one of the following reasons applies

• Long-term serious illness
• Long-term recovery period
• Your child was born prematurely (before the 37th week of pregnancy)
• Endangerment of mental health (death in the family, placement in a foster or adoptive family)

• As the legal guardian(s), you apply for a leave of absence at the elementary school responsible for you
• The elementary school will talk to you and show you what support is available.
• The elementary school then forwards the application to the school supervisory authority (school board).
• The school supervisory authority will decide on your application.
• The school supervisory authority can arrange for a supplementary school medical opinion or an additional school psychological or special educational assessment.
• You will receive a decision on the application from the school supervisory authority.

In the entry phase (grades 1-3), the period of leave of absence from school for health reasons is not taken into account when calculating school attendance times.

• Parents or legal guardians can apply for leave of absence for their child who will be six years old by June 30th of the current year and is therefore required to attend school.
• The application for leave of absence for the first grade must be submitted to the responsible elementary school.
• The child must attend the school medical examination.
• An appointment for this can be arranged by the elementary school or must be requested from the responsible health authority.
• The decision as to whether the child can actually be granted leave of absence is made by the school management.
• The application for leave of absence must be made jointly by the parents or legal guardians if you have joint custody.
