Application for licensing in accordance with § 4 of the Federal Veterinary Medical Regulations (BTÄO)

If you wish to work permanently as a veterinarian in Germany, you must be licensed (approbiert) to do so. You apply for the licence to practise as a veterinarian after passing the veterinary examination at the authority responsible for your place of study.

Single Point of Contact

For this procedure, you can use the service of the Single Point of Contact (Einheitlicher Ansprechpartner). They will guide you through the administrative procedure, take care of correspondence with all the offices responsible for your request and will be available to you as a competent advisor.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • Certificate of veterinary examination
  • Identity card or passport
  • Declaration as to whether you are the subject of criminal or public prosecution proceedings
  • medical certificate of fitness (not older than one month)
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of good conduct (not older than one month)

Note: Documents not written in German require translation by a publicly appointed translator and authentication by apostille or legalisation.

  • passed veterinary examinations in Germany after a total training period of at least five years (including six months of practical training)
  • personal reliability
  • health suitability
  • knowledge of the German language required for practising the profession

Verfahrensablauf

Submit a hand-signed application letter with the required documents to the competent authority.

  • The authority will confirm receipt of the application and inform you which documents may still be missing.
  • If the examination is positive, the licence to practise medicine will be issued and handed over to you against acknowledgement of receipt or sent to you by post.
