If you have accrued rent arrears and are threatened with eviction from your home, the Job Centre can take over these rent arrears in certain cases.

The assistance is usually granted as a loan. The decision always depends on the individual case; there is no legal entitlement.

The first thing you should do is contact your landlord or landlady. If you are financially able to do so, you can agree with them, for example, to pay the accrued rent in instalments.

If you are able to work but are not entitled to benefits from the Basic Security Income for Jobseekers (and thus do not receive benefits for the costs of accommodation according to Book II of the Social Code), you may have a claim for payment of the rent debt according to § 36 of the Twelfth Book of the Social Code (SGB XII) - Social Assistance. In this case, contact the competent social welfare office.
