As an employer, you must submit social insurance declarations for your employees who are subject to social insurance contributions. To do this, you need a company number.

The company number serves as an identification feature for the individual employment company. A company number is only required when you hire the first employee. It does not matter whether you hire a 450-euro employee, an employee subject to social insurance contributions or a trainee. As a rule, the Federal Employment Agency is responsible for assigning the company number. Under certain circumstances, however, you must contact a different person:

• You are a private household. You have never received an establishment number and employ workers who perform activities in a private household exclusively on a 450-euro basis? Then please contact the Minijob-Zentrale.
• Are you a miners' company (extraction of minerals), do you employ staff in a miners' company or do you employ workers who carry out miners' work in mines or who are used for rehabilitation work in opencast mines? Then please contact the German Pension Insurance Knappschaft-Bahn-See.
• Are you a maritime company (including coastal fishermen and coastal skippers)? Then please contact the German Pension Insurance Knappschaft-Bahn-See.

Please note that the application for a company number is not intended to notify changes (for example, relocation) to already existing employment companies. The changes must be communicated to the Federal Employment Agency using the data set for company data maintenance (DSBD).

Please apply for your company number electronically. You can apply yourself or a third party authorised to do so, for example a tax adviser.

• To do so, use the online application on the website of the Federal Employment Agency.
• In most cases, the company number is automatically assigned and displayed.
• In addition, you will receive a notification by post containing the company number.

Note: If your business data change or you completely and permanently give up your business activity, you must inform the Federal Employment Agency immediately using the data record "Business Data Maintenance (DSBD)".

In most cases, you will see the company number immediately when you apply for it electronically.

• Notification for social insurance for employment companies according to § 28a Para. 4 S. 1 SGB IV: at the latest when your first employee starts working
• other companies: notification with the first payroll, at the latest within 6 weeks after the start of the employment relationship
