Application for grants for alternative schools in accordance with the Saxon Law on Independent Schools and the Ordinance on the Granting of Grants for Independent Schools

An independent school approved as a substitute school may, on application, receive subsidies from the Free State of Saxony per pupil (pupil expenditure rate). The subsidy is granted for each pupil in a course of education (pupil expenditure rate). It consists of the following partial amounts per pupil:

  • personnel expenses for teachers
  • personnel expenses for teaching staff at general education special schools with the following special needs: vision, mental development, physical and motor development or emotional and social development
  • material expenditure

The estimated total amount of the current subsidy for the school year is paid out in twelve monthly instalments in advance (instalments).

During the first three years (waiting period), the school authority receives 40 per cent of the pupil expenditure rate. These payments are combined and, after the end of the waiting period, paid out again in three equal amounts spread over three years (a further 40 per cent), insofar as the school is operated beyond the waiting period.

Increase in the subsidy for general-education special schools

One pupil allowance is paid for each pupil who is educated at the school. For a pupil with severe multiple disabilities of a general education special school, the amount to be granted increases by 100 per cent.

The pupil spending rates valid for the school year are published on the Saxon Education Server.

Reduction of the grant

The grant is reduced if

  • the alternative school is the only school of this type in the territory of a public school authority and the participation of the Free State of Saxony in its maintenance has been revoked, and
  • if the school is subsidised by a public school authority.

In this case, the state financial assistance is reduced by the amount of the direct or indirect subsidy and other monetary benefits of the public school authority. If the subsidy is paid during the waiting period, the waiting period is extended by the duration of the subsidy by the public school authority.

No subsidy payment

Due to other funding, subsidies are not provided to

  • for schools pursuant to § 2 number 1a of the Hospital Financing Act (Krankenhausfinanzierungsgesetz)
  • for nursing schools under section 6(2) sentence 1 of the Nursing Professions Act, with the exception of an investment grant
  • if and to the extent that costs are reimbursed by another public institution.
