Published information is provided by municipal public libraries. They are part of the education system and serve school, vocational, general and cultural education. They impart media and information skills and support the promotion of reading among children and young people in a special way. In addition to the provision of foreign-language literature, intercultural events (e.g. readings) also take place. Various services are available, such as books, newspapers/magazines, sheet music, cards, audio books, CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, Blus-ray discs and online media.

A reader pass is required to use the existing offers.

For the issuance of the reader pass, the presentation of the identity card or passport with current registration certificate is required. Children and adolescents require the declaration of consent of their legal representative.

A reader pass is required for home loans, use of reference collections in reading rooms and for the use of databases and electronic newspapers/magazines.

The costs for use (annual fee) vary from one library to another. Special services (copies, repro orders, document delivery, use of the image archive, access to the Internet) are also subject to a charge.
