The Infection Protection Act (IfSG) protects the population in Germany. It also provides financial compensation for people who are affected by the protective measures.
If you are placed in domestic quarantine or banned from working as a result of an official measure under the Infection Protection Act and suffer a loss of earnings as a result, you are generally entitled to compensation for the loss of earnings incurred.
How you receive compensation depends on your type of employment:
As an employee, you will receive compensation paid directly by your employer for the first six weeks.
As an employer, you can have your expenses reimbursed by the competent authority.
Self-employed persons can apply for compensation directly from the competent authority.
The application for compensation must be submitted retroactively within 2 years of the start of the ban on work or the end of the quarantine.
Applications can be submitted online for 12 federal states at www.ifsg-online.de. You can also find further helpful information here.
The amount of compensation depends on the loss of earnings: For the first six weeks, it is granted in the full amount of the loss of earnings. From the beginning of the seventh week, it is granted in the amount of 67% of the loss of earnings incurred. In addition, social security contributions and social security expenses are also reimbursed on a pro rata basis.
The required documents vary depending on the type of employment:
For self-employed persons:
- Proof of income (tax assessment notice) for the previous year
- If available: Proof of loss of income during the period of the ban on work or isolation/quarantine
- Proof of insurance benefits received, if applicable
- If available: Proof of the officially ordered activity ban or officially ordered isolation/quarantine
- Proof of vaccination status, if applicable
For employers:
- Proof of wages for the two months prior to loss of earnings per employee
- Proof of wages for the months for which reimbursement is claimed, per employee
- If available: Proof of the officially ordered ban on work or the officially ordered isolation/quarantine
- Proof of vaccination status, if applicable
For authorized representatives:
- If you are submitting this application on behalf of a company or a self-employed person (e.g. as a tax consultant), please submit a power of attorney
- There was a quarantine in accordance with Section 30 IfSG or a ban on work in accordance with Section 31 IfSG.
- There was no possibility of compensating for the loss of earnings through another reasonable activity.
- The application for compensation must be submitted within 24 months of the start of the ban on work or the end of the quarantine.
- There was no illness or inability to work.
Applications are submitted online at https://www.ifsg-online.de. The procedure varies depending on the type of employment:
For employees:
Employees receive compensation from their employers for the first six weeks as continued payment of wages. From the seventh week onwards, they must submit an application to the competent authority themselves in order to continue receiving compensation.
For employers:
Employers can then apply to have the compensation reimbursed. They can submit applications for several employees together.
For self-employed persons:
Self-employed persons can submit the application themselves.
After the authorities have checked the claim, a corresponding decision will be issued.
