Are you a citizen of a member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, have obtained an educational qualification outside Germany that entitles you to self-employed assistance in tax matters and would like to work as a tax consultant in Germany?
Assuming your professional qualifications, the first step is the aptitude test before an examination board at the highest tax authority of the federal state in which you want to take up the activity.

If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements for admission to the aptitude test, you will receive binding information from the competent Chamber of Tax Consultants upon request.
Exams in Hesse
In Hesse, the aptitude test is conducted by an examination board of the Hessian Ministry of Finance. The exam, which you can only take in German, consists of a written and an oral part.

If you fail, you can retake the exam up to 2 times.

Hints:
- If you do not pay the examination fee on time, this is considered a waiver of the examination admission.

Application for admission to examination

- Submit your application documents to the body named in the form.
- The Chamber of Tax Consultants checks whether the information is complete and correct, if necessary, it obtains further enquiries.
- You will receive a written notification as to whether you are admitted to the examination
Suitability test
- The date, place and details of the course of the examination can be found in the written summons.
- In the written exam, you will complete 2 papers under supervision on 2 consecutive days.
- You will receive a written notification of the result of the written examination – if necessary with the invitation to the oral examination.
Note: The result will only be communicated to you in writing, please do not ask by phone or verbally.
If you miss the oral exam without sufficient excuse, the exam as a whole will be deemed to have been failed; otherwise you will receive a catch-up date.
The Hessian Ministry of Finance will issue you with a certificate of passing the examination, with which you can apply for appointment by the Chamber of Tax Consultants.
