If you want to travel outside Germany with your children, your child will need an identity card or passport, depending on the destination country. You can no longer apply for a child passport.
When traveling abroad, children need their own identity document from birth. There are two options for this. When traveling within the European Union (EU) as well as to Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Turkey, an identity card is sufficient. For destinations outside the EU, a passport is usually required.
Important: The children's passport will no longer be issued, extended or updated from 01.01.2024. For you as parents of children under the age of 12, this eliminates the need to apply for or renew a child's passport every year.
If your child still has a valid children's passport, this ID document can continue to be used until it expires.
