If a child is born during a voyage on a German seagoing vessel, the registry office I in Berlin records the birth in its birth register. The skipper of the ship records the birth and forwards it to the registry office I in Berlin.

If a child is born during a voyage on a sea-going vessel entitled to fly the federal flag, there is an obligation to report the birth to the registry office I in Berlin. The custodial parent files the birth notification with the ship's master. If the parents are unable to attend, any other person who was present at the birth is also obliged to report the birth.

A marriage certificate and proof of dissolution of marriage must also be submitted if the marriage has since been divorced or the husband has died within 300 days prior to the birth of the child.

• Notified ( applies regardless of the nationality of the parents or the child)
  • the custodial parent and any other person who was present at the birth, if the parents are unable to attend.
  • The notification is made to the shipmaster or shipwoman, who forwards it to the registry office I in Berlin.

• The custodial parent or, in case of incapacity, another person who was present at the birth, files the birth announcement with the ship's master.
• The ship's master or the ship's female master takes a record and forwards the birth announcement to the registry office I in Berlin.
• The required documents should be enclosed or submitted at the next opportunity to the Standesamt I in Berlin.
• Registration in the birth register takes place at Standesamt I in Berlin.
• Ordered (birth) certificates can be sent.

The notification is to be made immediately to the shipmaster by the persons obliged to do so. Immediately means without culpable delay.
