If you would like to take a section of the pharmaceutical examination, you must submit a written application to the state examination office responsible for you. You can find out more here.
Pharmaceutical training comprises a degree in pharmacy at a university of at least four years, a clinical traineeship of eight weeks, practical training of twelve months and the pharmaceutical examination, which must be taken in three examination sections.
To complete your degree in pharmacy, you must successfully pass the first and second sections of the pharmaceutical examination at the state examination office responsible for you.
In order to qualify for licensure as a pharmacist, you must successfully pass the third section of the pharmaceutical examination after passing the second section of the pharmaceutical examination and subsequently completing twelve months of practical training.
You must apply for admission to the three sections of the pharmaceutical examination at the state examination office responsible for you.
First section of the pharmaceutical examination:
- Birth certificate and, if applicable, marriage certificate

In the case of foreign certificates, also the notice of recognition - Proof of the eight-week clinical traineeship in accordance with the model in Annex 7 of the licensing regulations for pharmacists or the corresponding proof for pharmacy assistants, pharmacy engineers, pharmaceutical-technical assistants and pharmacy assistants
- Proof of having studied pharmacy for two years. If you are not yet able to provide this proof, it is possible to submit it within a period to be determined by the State Examination Office.
- Certificates of regular and successful participation in the courses in the subject areas listed in Annex 1 to letters A to D in accordance with the model in Annex 2 to the AAppO (licensing regulations for pharmacists). If you are not yet able to provide this proof, it is possible to submit it within a period to be determined by the State Examination Office.
Second section of the pharmaceutical examination:
- Certificate of passing the first section of the pharmaceutical examination according to the model in Annex 10 to the AAppO
- Proof that you have studied pharmacy for at least four years. If you are not yet able to enclose this proof, it is possible to submit it within a period to be determined by the State Examination Office.
- Certificates of regular and successful participation in the courses in the subject areas listed in Annex 1 to letters E to I in accordance with the model in Annex 2 to the AappO. If you are not yet able to provide this proof, it is possible to submit it within a period to be determined by the State Examination Office.
- The certificate for the compulsory elective subject prescribed in Annex 1 letter K (Aappo) in accordance with the specimen in Annex 3. If you are not yet able to attach this certificate, it is possible to submit it within a period to be determined by the State Examination Office.
Third section of the Pharmaceutical Examination P3:
- Certificates of passing the first and second sections of the Pharmaceutical Examination in accordance with the specimen in Annex 10 to the AAppO
- Proof of practical training in accordance with the model in Annex 5 to the AappO. If you have not yet completed the twelve months of practical training, you must submit a provisional certificate from the person responsible for the training stating that you will complete the training by the expected examination date. The final certificate in accordance with the model in Annex 5 AAppO must be submitted immediately upon receipt.
- Proof of participation in the accompanying courses in accordance with the model in Annex 6 to the AAppO
In order to be admitted to a section of the pharmaceutical examination, you must enclose the required evidence with your application.
You must submit the application for admission to an examination section of the pharmaceutical examination in writing in the form prescribed by the state examination office.
Use the forms prescribed by the state examination office responsible for you. Submit your application with the required documents to the state examination office responsible for you.
The application for admission to the first section of the pharmaceutical examination must be received by the relevant state examination office by January 10 or June 10.
The application for admission to the second and third sections of the pharmaceutical examination must be received by the relevant state examination office by the date announced by it.
