If you want to set up as a non-medical practitioner to practice medicine, you need a license.
A Heilpraktiker is a person who practices medicine professionally without being licensed as a doctor. The practice of medicine is any professional or commercial activity to diagnose, cure or alleviate illness, suffering or physical injury in humans, even if it is carried out in the service of others. In addition, the activity must require specialist medical knowledge and must not cause any damage to health. To practise medicine, you must apply for and obtain a license from the competent authority.
- Identity card or passport,
- for name changes, a birth certificate/name change certificate
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- If applicable, a registration certificate (if the identification document is not an identity card)
- Information from the Federal Central Register (document type 0)
- Proof of successful graduation from school
- Certificate from a registered doctor
- Proof of criminal proceedings
- Further documents and evidence if necessary
You must
- be at least 25 years old,
- have at least a secondary school leaving certificate or another equivalent qualification,
- be able to prove their physical and mental aptitude to practise medicine by means of a medical certificate and
- be able to prove the reliability required for practicing medicine by means of an official certificate of good conduct.
- You submit the application to practise medicine, including all the necessary documents, to the competent body.

- You take the knowledge test (written and oral)
- If you pass the examination, you will be granted a license.

Once you have submitted the application for permission to practice, the competent authority will decide on this in a timely manner. Please note that there is usually a waiting period between application and invitation to the examination. In the run-up to the examination, the necessary documents are requested and invitations are sent out.
There is no overriding deadline; individual deadlines result from examination dates and any requirements for evidence.
