The vocational school forms the school-based part of the dual training. Together with the training companies/the dual partners, it prepares students for a qualification at level 4 of the German Qualifications Framework (DQR 4).
Vocational schools provide the school-based part of dual training, which consists of practical training in the company and theoretical training at a vocational school. Vocational schools play an important role in this, as they ensure that trainees acquire the skills and knowledge required to be successful in their profession.
The duration of training is 2 to 3.5 years, depending on the vocational training.
Admission requirements for attending the vocational school are a training relationship including a training contract with a company in Bremerhaven or the surrounding area of Lower Saxony.
Trainees usually attend the vocational school two days a week or in block form and learn the theoretical basics of their profession there. The teaching content is mainly structured in learning fields, tailored to the respective training occupation and geared towards the requirements of the labor market. The dual system offers the advantage that trainees gain practical experience in the company right from the start and at the same time learn the theoretical basics at vocational school. This allows them to put what they have learned directly into practice and deepen their skills and knowledge. The trainees are bound by a training contract with the company and receive a salary.
In Germany, there are currently around 320 different training occupations on offer in various sectors. In Bremerhaven, around 70 dual training occupations are taught at vocational schools. In professions that are not trained at vocational schools in Bremerhaven, there is an agreement by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) for training in other federal states.
At the vocational schools in Bremerhaven, interesting additional qualifications can be acquired in addition to the school-based part of the dual training, such as the advanced technical college entrance qualification, European technician or European business management assistant.
