Would you like to adopt a child from abroad? Then you must qualify as an adoptive parent for the respective country in addition to the general examination.

Adoption abroad is divided into 2 aptitude tests: The general aptitude test at the local adoption agency and the country-specific aptitude test at an independent foreign adoption agency or the central adoption office of the state youth welfare office.

The country-specific suitability test checks whether you are suitable to adopt a child from a particular country. The suitability test is carried out by an independent international placement agency or the central adoption office of the State Youth Welfare Office.

In most cases, the international adoption process consists of 3 steps:

1. Mediation procedure in Germany
2. Adoption procedure abroad
3. Recognition of the adoption in Germany

After a positive assessment of suitability by the foreign placement agency in independent sponsorship or the central placement office of the state youth welfare office, the adoption application is sent to the responsible office in the child's home country.
