You would like to adopt a child from abroad? Then you must qualify as an adoptive parent in addition to the general examination for the respective country.

Intercountry adoption is divided into 2 suitability tests: The general suitability test at the local adoption agency and the country-specific suitability test at an independent international adoption agency or the central adoption agency of the state youth welfare office.

The country-specific suitability test checks whether you are suitable for adopting a child from a specific country. The suitability test is carried out by an independent international placement agency or the central adoption office of the state youth welfare office.

In most cases, the process of an international adoption takes place in 3 steps:

1. Mediation procedure in Germany
2. Adoption procedure abroad
3. Recognition of the adoption in Germany

After a positive determination of suitability by the international placement office or the central placement office of the state youth welfare office, the adoption application is sent to the responsible office in the child's home country.
