The Euro key was introduced as early as 1986 by the Club Behinderter und ihrer Freunde in Darmstadt und Umgebung e. V. (club of disabled people and their friends in Darmstadt and the surrounding area). With its introduction, the club pursued the goal of providing physically impaired people with a standard key with which they could gain free access to toilets suitable for the disabled.
Facilities include highway and train station restrooms, as well as public restrooms, among others.
In 2017, there were approximately 12,000 disabled toilets in Europe.
