If you no longer have your ID card because it can no longer be found, has been lost or stolen, you must report this loss immediately (loss report).
The identity card must be applied for again.
The loss or misplacement is to be reported to the citizens' offices. Theft must be reported to the police.
If the electronic proof of identity has been activated, it must be blocked either at the citizens' registration offices or by calling the blocking hotline 0180-1-33 33 33 (3.9 cents/minute from a German landline, maximum 42 cents/minute from a mobile network - also available from abroad) or the blocking emergency number 116 116 (toll-free).
When blocking, the personal data and the blocking password must be provided.
- Proof of identity
e.g. old or invalid identity card, valid (child) passport or birth certificate in the case of infants or young children who do not yet have a (child) passport or identity card.
- 1 biometric passport photo (not older than 6 months)

- The ID card can only be applied for in person, as the handwritten signature must be provided at the time of application.
- Upon receipt of the pin letter from Bundesdruckerei, you will be informed about the completion of the ID card.
Note: No pin letter will be sent by Bundesdruckerei for children younger than 15 years and 9 months at the time of application for the ID card. - A representative can be appointed to collect the ID card. To do so, the authorized representative must be able to identify himself/herself and bring a special collection authorization (see above right under "Forms") as well as the identity card or passport of the person granting the authorization.
