If, for example, as a result of homelessness or delinquency, you find yourself in a situation in life that impairs your ability to participate in community life and that you cannot overcome without the support of experts, you are entitled to "help to overcome special social difficulties" under certain conditions.

The "Help to overcome special social difficulties" includes, among other things, the following measures:

• counseling for those seeking help and their relatives
• outpatient or inpatient care
• assistance in obtaining and maintaining housing
• Measures to obtain a job
• Assistance in establishing and maintaining social relationships and in organizing everyday life.

The benefit is provided without taking income and assets into account. If the respective need can be covered by other provisions of the Social Codes VIII and XII, these have priority.

According to §§ 67 to 69 of the Social Code XII, anyone who has fallen into particularly difficult living conditions and is unable to overcome them by his or her own efforts is entitled to assistance in overcoming special social difficulties. The particularly difficult living conditions or the social difficulties must be clearly distinguished from general life crises such as unemployment, illness, partnership problems and the like by a particular degree of severity. Difficult living conditions can be, for example:

• An unsecured economic livelihood
• Non-existent housing or inadequate living conditions
• Violent living conditions
• Release from a closed institution
• Comparable disadvantageous living conditions

The "Help to overcome special social difficulties" must be applied for. The presentation of identity card, health insurance card and / or benefit statements (for example pension statement or unemployment benefit) is required. It is recommended that you consult the relevant offices in this regard. Benefits are paid from the date of application.
