According to the BAföG, training abroad can generally be funded if it is related to a course of study or schooling carried out in Germany. The Studierendenwerk in Bremen is responsible for processing applications from the entire Federal Republic for training in America - except the USA and Canada.
The aim of training assistance under the Federal Act on the Individual Promotion of Training (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz - BAföG) is to give young people the opportunity to complete a school or university education that matches their abilities and interests, irrespective of their social and economic situation.
The funding should be applied for in good time, at least six months before the start of the training abroad.
Whether a study, school attendance or internship in South and Central America is supported according to the BAföG can only be determined by the Studierendenwerk Bremen due to the different requirements within the types of education.
Furthermore, an entitlement to educational support depends on personal requirements such as age, aptitude and nationality.
If the training abroad is carried out in connection with attendance at a higher technical college, academy or university located in Germany, half of the funding amount is generally granted as an interest-free loan. In certain cases, however, the funding is granted as a full loan.
A written application must be made on the official forms.
Electronic application
With a personally authenticated DE-Mail address, a BAföG application can also be submitted online. A further written application is then no longer necessary. The amount of the education grant is generally dependent on the income and assets of the student as well as the income of his/her spouse and parents.
