If your driver's license has been lost (e.g., lost, stolen) or needs to be replaced for other reasons (e.g., because it has become illegible), you must apply for a replacement license.

Notice:

If your driver's license shows the key number 95 on the license and they have lost their license, please post the request: Apply for driver qualification certificate

As of 05/23/2021, the key number 95 will no longer be displayed on the driver's license. Applicants will also need a driver qualification certificate.

A replacement driver's license must be applied for if the previous one has been lost, stolen or has become illegible, for example.

The application for the issuance of a replacement driver's license must be submitted to the responsible office by the driver's license holder in person, in writing or on record. The replacement driver's license will be sent to you by mail.

• Important information about the photo booths in all offices of the Citizen's Office:
  • The machines are operated by outside companies and often do not work. It cannot be guaranteed that passport photos can be taken on site. We advise you to bring passport photos to the appointment.
• In addition, an index card copy from the driving licence office that issued the current driving licence, if the driving licence was issued outside Bremen before 1999
• if necessary, additional confirmation from the police of the theft report

• Driving license data must be available in Bremen
• In addition, a record card transcript from the driver's license office that issued the current driver's license, if the driver's license was issued outside of Bremen prior to 1999.

• The person concerned is required to prove that he or she holds a driver's license.
• A new driver's license is not required in the event of a change of name due to marriage or other circumstances, provided that the name on the driver's license can be seen on the identity card.
• A card driver's license is always issued as a replacement driver's license. This is produced centrally by the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin.
• Application must be made in person (as the signature must be in the presence of the official).
• Collection can be made by a person authorized in writing. The replacement driver's license can also be sent (against reimbursement of postage costs).
• If no replacement driver's license is applied for, the person concerned must relinquish the driver's license (§ 25 (4) FeV).
• There is no provisional driver's license, but there is a "fee-based exemption".
• When the new driver's license is issued, the previous driver's license loses its validity. If the lost driver's license is recovered, it must be handed in to the responsible driver's license authority without delay.
