If it is important for the development of the foster child, young adults can continue to receive educational support as part of full-time care even after their 18th birthday.
The goals of full-time foster care cannot be achieved in the short term. When a foster child turns 18, help can be continued. This is to ensure that the progress made in the development of the young adult is not jeopardized. Young adults receive help as long as their personality development does not allow them to lead a self-determined, self-responsible and independent lifestyle.
The application for adult assistance must be submitted by the young person before the assistance begins. If the young person is receiving educational assistance, the application can be submitted six months before turning 18. Adult assistance can be approved up to the age of 21. In justified exceptional cases, adult assistance can be approved beyond the age of 21.
Granting of assistance for upbringing in accordance with Sections 27 and 33 of the Social Code Book VIII. The continuation of the assistance can be applied for if the end of the assistance ends due to the approaching adulthood and/or because a continuation would contribute to stabilizing the situation of the adolescent or young adult.
The young people or young adults themselves submit the application for continued assistance.
