§ 44 Eighth Social Code (SGB VIII) https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/sgb_8/__44.html
The task of integrating a child who is initially a stranger into one's own family, of making it a home for the longer term or permanently in one's own family, of supporting and raising it, is a demanding task.
Before taking in a foster child, the responsible youth welfare office or foster care service checks the suitability of the interested foster carers.
The high demands placed on foster parents do not have to and should not be met by them alone. Rather, the foster family is part of a support network that has pedagogical knowledge, methodological competence and many years of experience.
Before starting their work, foster carers have completed qualifying courses offered by the youth welfare office or independent youth welfare providers.
The decisive factor for accepting a young person into general full-time care is a match between the needs of the foster child and the existing skills and resources of the carers. Carers in this form of care are not expected to have professional qualifications in a nursing or educational profession.
However, for the admission of a child with special educational needs, a professional or semi-professional background is expected, depending on the federal state. In this context, semi-professional is considered to be, for example, the prior care
a foster child over a period of at least two years or long-term care and support of children and young people in a voluntary capacity.
Foster parents can be couples with or without children of their own, as well as individuals with a stable social network.
Interested applicants should contact the local youth welfare office or foster care service. They can get information there.
You can attend information sessions without having to commit to anything.
To take the aptitude test, they must first qualify by taking appropriate courses.
They must also submit an application. They can do this via the online service Pflegekinderwesen Digital using the “Carers” form.
It is also possible to initially contact the local foster care service via the online service.
Eligibility to work as a carer according to §§ 27, 33 SGB VIII or obtaining a permit according to § 44 SGB VIII is not possible without an intensive application and qualification process. Simply submitting the application form does not lead to eligibility to work as a carer.
