You can apply for an extension of your residence permit issued to you for the recognition of your foreign professional qualifications if the maximum period of validity of two years has not yet been exhausted
If the validity of your residence permit expires before the deficiencies identified by the recognition authority have been remedied, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit in order to continue your further qualification.
Please note that the residence permit is issued for a maximum of two years. An extension of your residence permit is therefore only possible if this time frame has not yet been exhausted.
The extension must be applied for in good time before the expiry of your current residence permit.
The same requirements apply to the extension of the residence permit as for its issuance. In particular, your livelihood should be secured for the duration of your stay.
Under certain circumstances, the Federal Employment Agency may have to approve the employment again. As part of the approval process, it will check the working conditions, among other things.
The residence permit cannot be extended if it is evident that the further qualification cannot be completed within a reasonable period of time or if the extension was already excluded by the immigration authorities at the time of issue or the most recent extension.

In principle, the extension of your residence permit requires the submission of the same documents as when it was first issued. This includes:
If necessary, you may have to submit proof of your language skills or the deficit notice from the recognition body to the immigration authorities again.
- Recognized and valid identity document (for example: passport or passport substitute)
- Current biometric passport photo (45 x 35 mm)
- Employment contract and the “Employment Statement” form completed and signed by the employer (see forms)
- Description of how the missing skills, knowledge and abilities are to be compensated (for example: training plan)
- Evidence of securing your livelihood (for example: from your own assets, payment of security into a blocked account, bank guarantee, declaration of commitment, scholarship, proof of receipt of benefits such as parental or child benefit, proof of parents' income or similar)
- Proof of health insurance coverage (for example: confirmation of health insurance coverage or insurance policy)
If necessary, you may have to submit proof of your language skills or the deficit notice from the recognition body to the immigration authorities again.
In principle, the same requirements must be met to extend the residence permit as when the residence permit was first issued. This means:
- You are not yet able to provide evidence of the skills, knowledge and abilities in operational practice that the recognition body has identified as missing. You would therefore like to continue working in the non-regulated profession in order to create the conditions for the full recognition of your foreign professional qualification.
- The maximum period of validity of your residence permit of two years has not yet been exhausted.
- Your employer has guaranteed in your employment contract that he will continue to provide you with professional recognition.
- You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage for the remainder of your stay from your own resources without having to rely on public benefits.
- You have German language skills that correspond to your job; usually at least language skills at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- The Federal Employment Agency has, where necessary, approved the continuation of your employment (approval is usually obtained from the immigration authorities).
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- 96.00 € for a further stay of up to three months for adult applicants
- 93.00 € for a further stay of more than three months for adult applicants
Additional fees may apply for the issuance of a new residence permit in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT card), which can also be used as electronic proof of identity.
The timing and form of fee collection and payment vary depending on the authority.
In certain cases, fee reductions or exemptions may be considered (for example for those entitled to asylum or recognized refugees). Lower fees may apply for Turkish nationals. (see link: Section 45 Number 2 Residence Ordinance (AufenthV) )
- Find out whether your immigration authority allows you to submit your application online or whether it has a special application form.
- If the application can only be submitted in person, make an appointment at the immigration office. If you apply online, the immigration office will contact you after receiving your application to make an appointment.
- During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents, preferably in the original, with you to the appointment).
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken to produce a residence permit in the form of a new electronic residence permit (eAT card).
- The immigration authorities commission the Federal Printing Office to produce the eAT card. Once the process is complete, you will receive information and can collect the eAT card from the responsible office. The eAT card must always be collected in person.
- If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice.
