If you have found a lost or abandoned pet in Hamburg, you must report this to the responsible authority.
- If you have found a lost dog or other pet in Hamburg, you must immediately report the find to the person who lost it or the owner. If the owner is unknown, contact the Hamburg Animal Welfare Association of 1841 eV (HTV), which is the responsible office for lost animals in Hamburg (“Lost and Found Office for Animals”).
- They provide information about the circumstances that may be relevant to identifying the loser or the owner.
- Animal shelters provide the species-appropriate accommodation required by the Animal Welfare Act, as well as the care and nutrition of the animals and the necessary veterinary treatment.
- As the finder, you can take the animal into your home after a period of 7 days for cats and 5 days for other pets, provided there are no special reasons against it and the costs of accommodation are reimbursed. The HTV concludes a handover contract with the finder for this purpose.
- You must then house the animal in a species-appropriate manner, care for it, feed it and provide it with veterinary care. If the owner comes forward within six months of the report of the animal being found, you as the finder must return the animal.
- You can demand reimbursement of your expenses and a finder's fee from the owner. After six months, you as the finder acquire ownership of the animal, unless you have previously waived this right.
- Important: If you find an injured animal, be sure to discuss the next steps directly with the relevant authorities. If a loose animal poses a threat to public safety, especially road safety, you should notify the police immediately.
