Under certain conditions, you can apply to extend your temporary residence permit to pursue freelance work if you wish to continue pursuing your freelance work in Germany.

If you have a temporary residence permit for the purpose of pursuing a freelance activity and you wish to continue to pursue this activity beyond the expiry of your residence permit, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit.

Freelance activities include independently performed scientific, artistic, literary, teaching, educational or other self-employed professional activities (for example, self-employed doctors, notaries, tax consultants).

• Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
• Current biometric passport photo (45 x 35 mm)
• For regulated professions: Permission to exercise the liberal profession or confirmation of the granting of
• Evidence of securing your livelihood (e.g. equity, blocked account, declaration of commitment)
• Proof of your existing health insurance coverage
• From the age of 45: proof of adequate retirement provision (e.g. proof of own assets, acquired pension entitlements, business assets)
• Current registration certificate

• You have a recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute).
• You are already self-employed and working freelance in Germany and want to continue doing so.
• You have a valid professional permit, to the extent necessary for the performance of your employment, or you have been assured that the permit will be granted to you by the competent authority.
• If you are over 45 years old: You can provide evidence of adequate retirement provision
• You can secure your livelihood without relying on public benefits.
• You can secure your health insurance coverage without relying on public benefits.
• There is no interest in deporting you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.

• Find out whether the office responsible for your application allows you to submit your application online or has a special application form. In Hamburg, the application can be submitted online.
• You submit your application.
• The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any necessary documents or information from you.
• The responsible office will contact you to arrange an appointment.
• During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents, preferably in the original, with you to the appointment).
• If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken to produce a new electronic residence permit (eAT card).
• You pay the applicable fees.
• The Federal Printing Office will be commissioned to produce your new eAT card.
• Once completed, you will receive information and can collect the residence permit in the form of the eAT card in person.
• If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection letter. In this case, you will also have to pay an administration fee.

• Apply for an extension of a residence permit for the purpose of gainful employment for freelancers
• A temporary residence permit for the purpose of freelance work is already in place and will soon expire
• An extension can be requested if the activity is to be continued
