Do you want to adopt a child from abroad? In addition to the general examination, you must qualify as adoptive parents for the respective country.

The international adoption is divided into two aptitude tests: the general aptitude test at the local adoption agency and the country-specific aptitude test at a privately run international adoption agency or the central adoption agency of the state youth welfare office.

The country-specific aptitude test checks whether you are suitable for adopting a child from a specific country. The aptitude test is carried out by a privately run foreign placement agency or the central adoption agency of the state youth welfare office.

In most cases, the process of an international adoption takes place in 3 steps:

1. Mediation procedures in Germany
2. Adoption procedures abroad
3. Recognition of adoption in Germany

After a positive assessment of suitability by the privately run foreign placement agency or the central placement agency of the state youth welfare office, the adoption application is sent to the responsible agency in the child's home country.

There is no set processing time. This process may take some time.
