If you want to stay outside Germany for longer than six months and have a settlement permit, you must apply for a certificate confirming that your residence permit will continue to apply beyond this period.
If you have a settlement permit, have been residing legally in Germany for more than 15 years and your spouse also has a settlement permit, this will not expire if you stay outside of Germany for more than six months, your livelihood is secure and there is no interest in deportation.
Other holders of a settlement permit may, upon request, receive an extension of the return period.
