If you are a teenager or young adult and have integrated well in Germany, you can obtain a residence permit. The residence permit is usually issued for a limited period. Under certain conditions, you can apply for an extension of this residence permit.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
  • Current biometric passport photo (45 x 35 mm)
  • current residence permit
  • Evidence of integration
  • Proof of securing your livelihood (for example from your own assets,
    Deposit of security into a blocked account, bank guarantee, declaration of commitment)
  • If applicable: training certificate, enrollment certificate
  • Rental agreement and proof of the current rent
  • Proof of health insurance coverage (e.g. confirmation of health insurance coverage or insurance policy).
  • For minors: consent of all persons with custody of the child to the planned stay (declaration of consent); if the parents with custody cannot submit the application jointly for their child, a written authorization from the absent parent is required; if custody is only granted to one parent, the signature of this parent is sufficient
The documents and information must generally be presented in German. In individual cases, the immigration authorities may require less or more evidence.

Voraussetzungen

  • You are under 27 years old at the time of application
    • Application for persons who have not yet reached the age of 16: You as an adult with custody must submit the application
    • Application for persons who have already reached the age of 16: You can submit the application yourself or alternatively have it done by an adult with parental responsibility.
    • Application for persons who have already reached the age of 18: You must submit the application yourself.
  • You have been in possession of a temporary residence permit for at least 12 months or
  • You already have a residence permit according to Section 104c of the Residence Act (AufenthG). This can only be the case if
    • if you have been staying in Germany for five years without interruption as of October 31, 2022, either with a tolerated stay, a permit or a residence permit.
    • if you are the spouse, life partner or children of persons who have been in Germany for five years without interruption, have been permitted to stay or have a residence permit as of October 31, 2022.
  • You have been staying in Germany for three years without interruption, either with permission, tolerated or with a residence permit
  • You have successfully attended a school in Germany or obtained a recognized school or vocational qualification in Germany or you are currently completing a recognized vocational training course.
  • There are no concrete indications that you do not support the free democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Adults:
96.00 EUR for a further stay of up to three months
93.00 EUR for a further stay of more than three months

Minors:
48.00 EUR for a further stay of up to three months
46.50 EUR for a further stay of more than three months

Verfahrensablauf

  • Find out whether the office responsible for your application allows you to submit your application online or has a special application form. In Hamburg, the application can be submitted online.
  • You submit your application.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any necessary documents or information from you.
  • The responsible office will contact you to arrange an appointment.
  • During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents, preferably in the original, with you to the appointment).
  • If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken to produce a new electronic residence permit (eAT card).
  • You pay the applicable fees.
  • The Federal Printing Office will be commissioned to produce your new eAT card.
  • Once completed, you will receive information and can collect the residence permit in the form of the eAT card in person.
  • If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection letter. In this case, you will also have to pay an administration fee.

Bearbeitungsdauer

You should expect processing to take 6-8 weeks. If you submit all the required documents in full and well prepared, processing may be quicker. After approval, it will then take another 4-6 weeks for the Federal Printing Office to produce your electronic residence permit.

Frist

You must submit your application before your current residence permit expires (6-8 weeks in advance is recommended).

As long as you are in school, doing vocational training or studying at university, it is OK to receive public support to live (welfare benefits). This alone does not lead to a refusal of permission to stay here.
