Foreign, underage, unmarried children can obtain a residence permit for family reunification in order to establish a family community.
Foreign, underage, unmarried children can obtain a residence permit for family reunification in order to establish a family community if the child is to live with a family member in Germany. They must apply for the residence permit at the responsible authority.
- Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute) of the child and of you as a parent
- Your child's visa, if required for entry
- Current biometric photo of your child in passport format (45 x 35 mm)
- Your child’s birth certificate
- Proof of recognition of paternity if the parents are not married and the child is to join you as the father.
- If a parent with custody remains abroad: proof of custody and consent of the parent living abroad.
- Your child has a valid identity document.
- Your child has the necessary visa if this was required for entry.
- There is no interest in deportation.
- Both parents or the parent with sole custody has a residence permit.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- You have adequate health insurance coverage and financial resources to support your family.
- An apartment is rented in Germany that offers enough space for your family.

Additional fees may apply for issuing a residence permit in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT card), which can also be used as electronic proof of identity.

- You make an appointment with the responsible authority.
- You appear at the appointment and submit your application along with the necessary documents.
- The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any missing information or documents from you.
- If your application is approved, the responsible authority will commission an external agency to produce your electronic residence permit (eAT card).
- You will be informed when your eAT card is ready for collection. You must collect the eAT card in person.
