If you want to move to Germany to be with your German minor child, you can apply for a residence permit for family reunification.
You can apply for a residence permit if you, as a foreign parent, want to move in with your German, minor child.
- Valid passport or passport replacement
- Current biometric photo
- Visa, if required for entry
- Your child’s birth certificate
- Proof of custody, if applicable
- If applicable, proof of family life
- Current registration certificate
In individual cases, the responsible authority may request further documents from you.
- You have a valid passport or passport replacement.
- If required for your entry: You have a visa.
- Your child is a minor, single and has German citizenship.
- You have custody of your child and want to exercise it
- If you do not have custody of your child: You already live in a family relationship with the child in Germany.
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany

Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be considered. Additional fees may be charged for issuing a residence permit in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT), which can also be used as electronic proof of identity.
- You make an appointment with the responsible authority.
- You submit your application together with the necessary documents.
- The responsible authority will examine your application.
- If your application is approved, you will receive a residence permit. Your fingerprints may be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
- If your application is rejected you will receive a rejection notice.
The residence permit should be applied for at the latest eight weeks before your valid visa or current residence permit expires or – if you are legally staying in Germany without a visa – within 90 days after entry.
