Would you like to work as a geriatric nurse in Germany? Then you need a state permit. You can have your foreign professional qualification recognised.
The profession of geriatric nurse is regulated in Germany. This means that you need a state permit so that you can work as a geriatric nurse in Germany. With the permit, you may use the professional title of geriatric nurse and work in the profession.
Even with a professional qualification from a so-called third country, you can obtain a state permit from the competent authority in Germany. Third countries are all countries that do not belong to the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. In order to obtain the permit, you must have your foreign professional qualification recognised.
Nursing training in Germany was reformed on January 1, 2020 and the new Nursing Professions Act applies. The profession based on this is called “nursing specialist” or “nursing specialist” and is new. There is a transitional period for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications based on the Nursing Act. Until December 31, 2024, foreign professional qualifications may still be temporarily recognized as a geriatric nurse. The competent authority will advise you.
In the recognition procedure, the competent authority compares your professional qualification from abroad with the German professional qualification and checks the equivalence. The equivalence of the professional qualification is an important prerequisite for the granting of the state permit. In addition to the equivalence of the professional qualification, you must also meet other requirements for the granting of the permit. Other requirements are e.g. B. sufficient German language skills and health suitability.
If your professional qualification comes from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, different regulations apply.

- Personal suitability: You are reliable for work as a geriatric nurse and have no criminal record.
- Medical suitability: You can work mentally and physically as a geriatric nurse.
- You have German language skills at the required language level. This is usually language level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
