Certain persons and companies that discharge wastewater or operate wastewater treatment plants are obliged to appoint one or more company officers for water protection.
If your company is of a certain size or carries out certain activities, you may be required to appoint a person responsible for water protection. This person will carry out tasks such as monitoring and coordinating water protection measures. The competent authority may also ask you to appoint a person responsible for water protection if you would not normally be required to do so.
Proof of the necessary specialist knowledge through a suitable course or further training.
You are obliged to appoint a person responsible for water protection if you
- discharge more than 750 cubic metres of wastewater in one day or
- discharge less than 750 cubic metres of wastewater in one day, but have been requested by the competent authority to appoint a person responsible for water protection or
- operate a facility for storing, filling, producing and treating substances hazardous to water or a facility for using substances hazardous to water in the commercial sector or in the area of public institutions or
- operate a pipeline system.
- You will receive an order from the responsible authority.
- You notify the appointment of a person responsible for water protection in writing. In the notification, you describe the duties of the person responsible for water protection.
- If there are any further queries, the responsible authority will contact you again. If there are no further queries, your report will be filed.
- If necessary, you must inform your works council or staff council about the planned appointment of water protection officers and the tasks assigned to them before submitting the notification.
The processing time depends on the type and scope of your advertisement as well as the quality of the documents and information submitted.
If you have already appointed an emission control officer or a waste management officer, this person can also perform the tasks and duties of a water protection officer.
