In certain countries, you will need an international driving license in addition to your national driving license to prove your driving license.

For temporary stays in certain countries outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), you need an international driving license to prove that you have a driving license. The international driving license is only a translation of the national driving license and is therefore only valid in conjunction with it.

• valid driving license
• valid identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration
• a biometric passport photo (45 x 35 millimetres, portrait format)
• the appointment confirmation
• If necessary, a copy of the index card (only required if you still have a paper driving license and the last driving license was not issued in Hamburg)

In addition, if an authorized representative submits the application:

• written authorization of the applicant
• valid identity card of the authorized representative
• Applicant’s original driving license and identity card

• Her main residence is in Hamburg.
• You have a driving license in EU card format (issued from 1999).

You need a card driver's license for the international driver's license. If you still have an old paper driver's license, you must also exchange this at your appointment. You can find more information about this under the link "LBV driver's license exchange" (see below).

Applying for an international driving license costs 16.90 EUR.
If you apply for the international driving license by post, an additional EUR 3.50 will be charged for registered mail.
If you first have to exchange your driving license for an EU card driving license, additional costs will also apply.
The fee is based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).

Book an appointment online and bring all the necessary documents with you to your appointment. Your request will be processed on site. If all the documents are complete and you already have a card driver's license, the international driver's license will be issued directly on site.
If you first need to exchange your driving license for a new EU card driving license, you will receive the international driving license together with your new driving license after about three weeks.
If you apply for the international driving license by post, it will be sent to your home by registered mail.

The international driving license will be issued immediately on site if an EU card driving license is already available.
If you need to exchange your paper driving license first, you will receive the international driving license together with your new EU card driving license. It takes about three weeks to produce.

Period of validity
The international driving license is valid for a maximum of three years. However, if a class C or D driving license is to be registered with a validity period of less than three years, the international driving license will also be shortened to the validity period of the registered classes C or D.
Once the validity period has expired, a new international driving license must be applied for.

Application with power of attorney
If you are unable to submit the application in person, you can issue a written power of attorney to another person. The authorized person can apply for and collect the international driving license on your behalf upon presentation of their own ID. Applications with a power of attorney are only possible if the driving license is in the format of the EU card driving license. The authorized person must be of legal age.

Application by post
The international driving license can also be applied for by post. If the completed application form and all the necessary documents are available to the LBV, the international driving license will then be sent to you by post. In this case, a visit to the LBV is not necessary.

• for proof of driving license for temporary stays abroad in certain countries (outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA)
• the international driving license is only valid in conjunction with the national driving license
• the validity period of the international driving licence must not exceed the validity period of the national driving licence
