A deregistered vehicle can be re-registered upon application.

The vehicle has been taken out of service (deregistered) and is now to be registered again.
If you have moved or purchased a deregistered used vehicle, the vehicle owner data will be updated when you re-register it.

• Valid identity card or passport with current registration certificate
• Company: Proof of company (e.g. excerpt from the commercial register, business registration or excerpt from the register of associations for registered associations)
• Electronic insurance confirmation -eVB number- (available from the motor vehicle insurance company)
• Registration certificate part II (vehicle registration)
• Registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration) with a note on the decommissioning
• valid test certificate of the last main inspection (HU) (TÜV), if a HU was already required for the first time and, if applicable, proof of the safety test and exhaust gas test carried out
• an original SEPA combined mandate for collecting motor vehicle tax by direct debit (see "LBV, SEPA mandate for motor vehicle tax" under Links)
  If the tax is not to be paid by the owner himself, but by a so-called third party who is willing to pay, a copy of the third party's ID card must be submitted.

Additionally, if your vehicle has been recovered after being stolen:

• Approval confirmation from the police that the vehicle is no longer being searched for

• the legibly completed power of attorney in the original with a legible color copy of the vehicle owner's ID. Note: The color copy must be labeled "COPY".
• ID of the representative in the original

• has been taken out of service (deregistered) and is now to be registered again.
• For private individuals: The owner’s main residence for registration purposes is in Hamburg.
• For companies: The registered office or the location of the branch or trader is in Hamburg.

23.00 to 50.00 EUR according to the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt). The specific fee amount can only be determined on site upon presentation of the complete documents.

• Book an appointment online.
• Bring all required documents with you.
• Your request will be processed on site.
• Documents and signs will be given to you.
• Your vehicle is registered.

Online application: Internet-based vehicle registration
You can also submit the application for re-registration online if you were the last owner of the vehicle when you deregistered and are still living in Hamburg (see link below).
There are also prerequisites for

• an identity card with an electronic proof of identity function,
• a new registration certificate part I (vehicle registration),
• a number plate reservation (for a maximum of one year) made upon deregistration (decommissioning).

Note: On the new registration certificate Part I (the vehicle registration document) there is a hidden but revealable security code that can be recognized by a silver sticker.

A vehicle registration must be made immediately.

The previous license plate number can only continue to be used if it was reserved for this purpose when the vehicle was taken out of service (deregistration).
If the holder and owner of the vehicle are not the same (e.g. in the case of leasing vehicles), the LBV must be informed of who the vehicle is to be registered for.

Make up for due vehicle inspections
If a general inspection, emissions test or safety check was due in the period between deregistration and the application for re-registration of the vehicle, this must be carried out before the vehicle is re-registered.

After a long period of non-operation, an expert opinion is required
If the vehicle and owner data have already been deleted from the central vehicle register (7 years after deregistration) and the data can no longer be verified elsewhere, an expert report from an officially recognized expert is required.

New license plate may be required
If the number plate was not reserved when the vehicle was deregistered, or if another owner is re-registered, a new number plate must be applied for.

Driving with assigned, unsealed license plates
Journeys related to the registration process can also be made with assigned unsealed license plates if covered by insurance. Such trips are trips to carry out the main inspection (TÜV) and to the registration authority. These journeys are restricted to the registration district and the adjacent registration districts.
