You can receive financial support for your school or university education if you meet the relevant requirements. This support is called BAföG.

The training support according to the Federal Training Support Act (BAföG) enables young people to complete a school or university education that corresponds to their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation.
You receive training support for your living expenses and training (needs). What needs you are entitled to depends on the training you (will) attend. This requirement can be reduced if your income or assets, as well as the income of your parents or your spouse or your registered partner exceeds the allowances. The need for and the calculation of the training grant can be found in the BAföG notification.

The necessary forms are available from the Office for Educational Support and can also be printed out from the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. An online application is possible

General requirements:

• German citizenship
• foreign citizenship depending on residence status
• You are a maximum of 29 years old
• This is an apprenticeship that can be funded under BAföG (no in-company training).
• Your achievements as a student give reason to expect that you will achieve your educational goal.

Depending on the type of training grant, there may be other requirements.
It is always advisable to inquire about exceptions to the basic requirements.

There are no fees.

Online application:

• If you would like to apply for BAföG online, you can do so using the online identification function of your identity card, electronic residence permit or European eID.
• If you do not have an eID, you can still submit your application data electronically. For a legally valid application, however, you must print out the application, sign it and send it by post or upload it to the responsible Office for Educational Support.

Application in paper form:

• Go to the BAföG website and download the application forms that apply to you.
• The forms must be filled out, printed out and signed.
• Add the necessary evidence.
• Send the completed application forms with the supporting documents directly to the Office for Educational Support that is responsible for you.

The Office for Educational Support checks the documents for completeness. If documents are missing, they will be requested from you. If the application is complete, it will be checked and you will be informed of the decision by notification.

The processing time depends on your individual living conditions and your participation in the provision of the service

BAföG is only paid from the application month in which the application is received by the responsible office, at the earliest when the training begins.

There are no hints or special features.
