In order to ensure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition in accordance with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), it must be subjected to a general inspection (HU) at regular intervals. Since January 1, 2010, the so-called emissions test (AU) has been integrated into the HU as a partial test in accordance with Section 47a of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations.

Your vehicle will be checked by an expert or test engineer to determine any defects and the emissions behavior. After the examination, you will receive a detailed test report.

The month in which the vehicle must be presented for the next general inspection at the latest is verified with an inspection sticker attached to the rear license plate.

Frist

The legislator prescribes periods of between 12 and 36 months for the main inspection (HU); Detailed deadlines for examining the vehicles can be found in Appendix VIII of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations. Part I of the registration certificate (ZB I, formerly the vehicle registration document) shows when a general inspection is to be carried out; since July 1, 2012 there is no backdating if the date for the next general inspection has been exceeded. Instead, an in-depth supplementary examination is prescribed if the deadline has been exceeded by more than two months. Due to the associated higher effort, a 20% higher fee is due for the supplementary examination.

Storage of HU test report
The general inspection report must be kept in accordance with Section 29 (10) StVZO and presented to the vehicle registration authority whenever the vehicle documents are dealt with. If the vehicle is passed on (e.g. sale, gift), it must be handed over to the purchaser.

Loss of HU test report
If you have lost your test report, you are obliged to either obtain a duplicate (from the institution that carried out the HU, see registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration)), or to carry out a new HU at your own expense to let. The inspection sticker alone is not sufficient as proof of a valid HU.
