As a student, you can receive financial support under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) if you meet certain requirements.

As a pupil or student, you can receive benefits under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) if your training is eligible for funding and if the resources required for your living expenses and training are not otherwise available to you.

Aim of the training support:
The aim is to give all young people the opportunity to complete the training that matches their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation.

Examination by the Office for Training Support:
After you have submitted a BAföG application, the responsible office for educational support will check whether the desired training can be funded. It is often a good idea to seek advice from the office for educational support before submitting your application.

Calculation of individual funding:
When calculating your individual funding, a flat rate is used to cover your monthly needs. The amount of funding you receive depends on whether you are attending school or studying, and where you live and train. Your own income and assets as well as your parents' income are taken into account when calculating your needs. If you are married, your spouse's income is taken into account. This also applies to registered civil partnerships. If you have at least one child under the age of fourteen living in your household, you can receive a childcare allowance for each child in addition to the BAföG benefits calculated for you.
In exceptional cases, you may also receive training support regardless of your parents’ income.

Funding is only possible if you are under 45 years old when you start your training. You can only receive funding beyond this age limit in the cases expressly stated in the law (Section 10, Paragraph 3 BAföG).

If you have submitted the application together with all the necessary documents to the responsible Office for Educational Support or submitted it electronically, the Office will decide on the amount of the support and you will receive a written notification.

The application can also be made informally. A personal appearance is not necessary.

You will receive BAföG benefits from the month you apply, but no earlier than the start of your training.

Please note that an application is only valid once the signed application has been received by the Office for Training Support.

For students:
The offices for training support in the districts or urban districts are responsible for student support under the BAföG in Germany. For trainees at evening schools, colleges, higher technical schools and academies, the Office for Training Assistance is responsible for the district in which the training center is located. For all other students, the responsibility lies with the Office for Educational Support of the city/district administration at the place of residence of the parents.

For students:
The student unions of the universities at which you have been or will be enrolled are responsible for student support in Germany in accordance with BAföG.

For training abroad:
Depending on the destination country, different central international offices in Germany are responsible for foreign funding under the BAföG, both for students and for school pupils.

In addition to the text of the law, the website also contains the application forms, information on electronic application submission, the listings of training centers in the federal states for eligible training, a nationwide listing of the offices for training support and example BAföG calculations.
