Teaser

For the study of human medicine, periods of related studies in Germany and abroad as well as human medicine studies abroad can be recognized. The examinations taken as part of these studies will be recognized if they are equivalent.

Volltext

Under certain conditions, periods of related studies in Germany and abroad as well as human medicine studies abroad in the Federal Republic of Germany are recognized and the examinations taken as part of these studies are recognized, provided that equivalence is given (see § 12 of the licensing regulations for doctors (ÄAppO)).

The extent of the crediting of study time is determined by the type and number of certificates eligible for recognition and the actual semesters studied.

Voraussetzungen

Crediting or recognition requires the equivalence of the services provided. This must be checked in each individual case on the basis of the supporting documents.

The extent to which periods of study in the preclinical study phase can be credited depends, in addition to the semesters actually studied, on which and how many of the certificates listed in Annex 1 to the ÄAppO or in Section 2 (2) sentence 5 and Section 2 (8) sentence 2 half-sentence 1 ÄAppO are proven or have been recognized from a foreign or related course of study. One semester of study can be credited if proof of at least six months of study has been provided and three of the major certificates listed below or two major and two minor certificates have been completed regularly and successfully during this time.

The prerequisite for the recognition of an academic year is proof of at least one year of study and six major or four major and four minor certificates completed during this time.

Internships and courses prescribed in Annex 1 Section I No. 1 to 6 ÄAppO (= "major certificates"):

  • Practical course in physics for medical students
  • Chemistry practical course for medical students
  • Practical course in biology for medical students
  • Practical course in physiology
  • Practical course in biochemistry/molecular biology
  • Macroscopic anatomy course
  • Microscopic anatomy course
  • Medical psychology and medical sociology course

Practical courses and seminars prescribed in Annex 1 Section I No. 7 - 10, Section II and Section III ÄAppO; proof of performance in accordance with Section 2 Para. 2 Sentence 5 ÄAppO; pre-clinical elective subject in accordance with Section 2 Para. 8 Sentence 2 Half-sentence 1 ÄAppO (= "small certificates"):

  • Physiology seminar
  • Biochemistry/molecular biology seminar
  • Anatomy seminar
  • Medical psychology and medical sociology seminar
  • Practical course in medical terminology
  • Practical course on the introduction to clinical medicine (with patient presentation)
  • Practical course to explore professional fields
  • Pre-clinical elective subject

Periods of clinical medical studies completed abroad can only be credited towards the clinical medical studies prescribed by the ÄAppO if they are equivalent (Section 12 (1) No. 2 ÄAppO). This requires having passed the first section of the medical examination in accordance with the new ÄAppO (or, analogously, having passed the preliminary medical examination in accordance with the version of the ÄAppO valid until 30.09.2003 - old ÄAppO) at a university or equivalent higher education institution (§ 1 Para. 2 No. 1, Para. 3 Sentence 1 No. 2 and sentence 2 ÄAppO), which are equivalent in terms of the type and scope of the course and the performance assessment (including grading) to the subjects to be proven in accordance with Section 27 ÄAppO (Section 27 (1) sentence 4 ÄAppO), cross-sectional areas (Section 27 (1) sentence 5 ÄAppO) and block internships (Section 27 (4) ÄAppO). The same applies to interdisciplinary certificates of achievement (Section 27 (3) ÄAppO).

Proof of equivalence must be provided in the form of certificates from the relevant university lecturer at the home university. In addition to the duration of studies abroad, the decisive factor for the recognition of periods of study is how many of the credits listed in § 27 para. 1 sentences 4 and 5 and para. 4 ÄAppO can be recognized. One semester of study can be recognized for every seven of these credits. In principle, a maximum of seven equivalent credits are recognized per semester. This assessment key corresponds to the three-year medical studies prescribed in the area of application of the ÄAppO after passing the first section of the medical examination in accordance with the new ÄAppO (or analogously after passing the preliminary medical examination in accordance with the old ÄAppO) up to the start of the practical year (Section 1 (3) sentence 1 no. 2 and sentence 2 ÄAppO) and the 39 compulsory courses to be completed during this period (Section 27 (1) sentences 4 and 5 and (4) ÄAppO).

Kosten

  • Recognition of periods of study and recognition of examinations: EUR 60 per recognition notice
  • Recognition of academic achievements (without semesters and examinations): 30 EUR per notice of recognition

Verfahrensablauf

The recognition/credit procedure is carried out on application.

This must be submitted to the state examination office of the state in which the applicant is enrolled or admitted to study medicine. For students who have not yet been enrolled or admitted to study medicine at a university within the scope of the ÄAppO, the state examination office of the state in which the applicant was born is responsible. If this is not the case, the State Examination Office of North Rhine-Westphalia is responsible.

The equivalence of the certificates of achievement from a related course of study pursued in Germany must be proven by submitting a certificate of equivalence issued by the responsible medical faculty as follows:

  • If the applicant is already enrolled or admitted to study medicine at a Bavarian university by means of certificates from the internship or course directors of this university.
  • If the applicant is not yet enrolled or admitted to study medicine at a Bavarian university, the following applies:
    • If the coursework was completed at a university with a medical faculty, certificates from the heads of the medical courses there.
    • If the coursework was completed at a university without a medical faculty, certificates from the internship or course instructors at the university at which the student intends to study medicine.

Hinweise

Recognition of the first section of the medical examination is only possible if, in addition to the completed pre-clinical performance records, proof of training in first aid, the completion of a three-month nursing service and the pre-clinical elective subject is provided (Section 2 (8) sentence 2 half-sentence 1, Sections 5, 6 and 10 (4) no. 1 (d) and (e) ÄAppO).

The system of this examination (Section 13 (1) and Section 14 (3) ÄAppO) does not permit exemption from individual subjects or subject areas of the first section of the medical examination.

Recognition of the equivalence of previous training certificates: Students who wish to continue or commence medical studies at a German university and do not have a higher education entrance qualification obtained in Germany must have their previous educational qualifications recognized by the competent authority as equivalent to a German higher education entrance qualification. In Bavaria, the Certificate Recognition Office for the Free State of Bavaria is responsible for this (Bayerisches Landesamt für Schule, Stuttgarter Str. 1, 91710 Gunzenhausen).

  • if you are enrolled in human medicine at a Bavarian university, contact the medical examination office at your university (see "Further links")
  • if you do not yet have a place to study in Germany and were born in Bavaria, to the Government of Upper Bavaria, State Examination Office for Human Medicine
